How to wash glasses and cups: Common washing up ‘mistake’ can leave them tasting ‘foul’

Those guilty of not rinsing their mugs and cups at home may not realise it’s bothering their guests.

Property development experts, Essential Living, have analysed thousands of Reddit comments to find the top 10 biggest turn-offs people find when they enter someone else's home.

For those who wash up, “kitchenware that tastes like soap” ranks as the biggest turn-off.

One Reddit user said: “People whose method of washing up involves washing in soapy water and not rinsing thoroughly before drying…

“[Their] drinks always end up tasting like soap because of the soap residue!”

Another commented: “I know a lady who just submerged everything in soapy water, left it to drain and put it away.

“I was gobsmacked, but at least I knew why my coffee tasted of Fairy [Liquid]. Shudder.”

Britons who don’t have a dishwasher will be aware of the downfalls of washing dishes such as watermarks, soap scum and food debris.

With this in mind, Dominic Lees-Bell, a cleaning expert at kitchen retailer, Tap Warehouse, has shared how to wash glasses and kitchenware at home to stop them from tasting “soapy”.

He explained: “There’s nothing worse than taking a sip of your drink and tasting soap, but luckily it’s an easy mistake to remedy.

“Next time you finish washing, rinse any kitchenware thoroughly in hot or cold water before placing it on the side to dry.

“With cups, glasses and bowls, always check that you have rinsed inside them too, as that’s typically where the soap sits.

“Aside from the foul taste, what a lot of people don’t realise is just how unhygienic it is to not rinse as well.

“By not rinsing your kitchenware after washing it, you'll still have food residue and bacteria on it.

“If you are using a dishwasher then there’s no need to worry about rinsing anything after the cycle is done - the appliance does the job for you.”
